This Victorian Italianate brick house stands on the crest of one of the highest hills in Petersburg. In early years only the foundation existed, and it was reputed to be a "courting place", thus became known as Fulton's Folly. Fifteen-year-old Elijah Gault built Maple Crest house on the foundation in 1865.
The exterior of the house was used in the filming of "The Awakening Land", a television movie made back in 1978 starring Elizabeth Montgomery, Jane Seymour and Hal Holbrook. For interior shots of the same house, the film makers used the Governor's mansion in Springfield. Maple Crest is listed as "Gault House" on tours of the older section of Petersburg. |
