Historic Menard County is located 20 miles northwest of Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln spent his younger days at New Salem where he honed his skills as businessman, community leader, debater, negotiator, lawyer, and politician. Lincoln---in his multiple jobs of land surveyor, legal counsel, and mail deliverer---also traveled through and visited friends in several other communities in Menard County including Athens, Oakford, Petersburg, and historic Sandridge.
Visitors to Lincoln's Historic New Salem State Park have compared New Salem to Colonial Williamsburg because of the compelling authenticity and charm of this reproduction of the village. Visitors who have toured our county seat, Petersburg have called Petersburg "the Galena of Central Illinois" due to its stunning beauty...hilly landscape, lovely Victorian homes, and strong historical affiliations.
